Underrated films of 2017

2017 has seen plenty of blockbusters, and has some more even to come in the final months of the year. I don't deny that Star Wars, Dunkirk and the return of Guardians of the Galaxy aren't worth while watches, but there are so many less hyped about films that have been looked over this year. Both in the cinema and from streaming sites, here are the films I think you should watch, even if you haven't seen them advertising on the big screen and busses.

The Beguiled was shadowed by the release of Dunkirk, and the fact that it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Nonetheless, this remake of the infamous tale of seven southern belles against a soldier was fantastic. Beautifully remastered by Sofia Coppolla, and a fascinating insight into female sexuality and tension, The Beguiled is worth a watch for anyone with a dark sense of humour, and an interest in this truly complex period of societal change.

Amidst all the things that Netflix releases on, pretty much, a weekly basis, Casting Jonbenet is hands down the best thing they've created this year. This experimental documentary explores and narrative that has been excessively covered by the media. If you haven't heard about the murder of Jonbenet, look it up, then go watch this documentary. It truly messes with you, and |I bet you'll never trust an American news report ever. Again.

I'm not entirely sure if this even came out in cinemas, but as soon as I saw the trailer I was sold. The Girl With All The Gifts is a refreshing addition to the zombie genre, made by Film4. Set in a post apocalyptic Britain, girl with all the gifts follows how a single girl stands out from the usually nondescript crowd of zombies, and causes her own personal revolution. Scary, thrilling and heartwarming, this is one even for those who aren't necessarily horror fans.

It Comes At Night sells itself as a horror in the trailer, bit in reality its a psychological thriller that is much more nuanced than any other horror I've seen. For the entire film you are never quite sure what has happened, other than there has been an outbreak of an illness that has left everyone terrified, and volatile. Not for the faint-hearted, but also not for those who want mindless jump scares. It comes at night is unsettling, and thoughtful.
