I Am Not Okay With This

From the producer of End Of The Fucking World Jonathan Entwistle, we have another snappy, highly addictive, teen drama/comedy - I Am Not Okay With This. Starring Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff, previously seen alongside each other in the nostalgic horror remake of Stephen King's IT, I Am Not Okay With This follows Sydney as she discovers there is more brewing inside her than just teenage hormones. Rooted in it's grungey atmosphere and dripping with black comedy, I Am Not Okay With This both warms and stuns your heart with its creative narrative and stylised performances.

Based on a comic book of the same name, the show sees Sydney grappling with teenage angst, the death of her father, and a supernatural power that she cannot control or comprehend. It is not an understatement to say that puberty, to many, feels like the world is crumbling around them, and so to place this experience alongside a super-hero style discovery story is deeply effective. Angst that feels like it could crush a car, and sadness that could drown a city, are waves of emotion that we have all felt, and the writing of Sydney Novak puts this in beautiful perspective. Lillis's performance feels over-egged at first, but as the succinct twenty-minute episodes unfold this overwrought performance becomes more and more fitting.

In stark contrast to Lillis's seething temper is Stanley, played by Oleff, who brings boundless joy to every scene he enters. The way that Stanley interacts with the soundtrack is tender and nostalgic, transporting the audience to a time of innocence, when love can drive you crazy but also make you wholly selfless. Alongside one another Sydney and Stanley embody a sense of youth that suggests romanticism but maintains reality, even though what underpins the whole show is supernatural.

The production style of I Am Not Okay With This is undeniably 'on trend', but hey, if people are enjoying it then why the hell shouldn't producers keep doing it. Laugh out loud funny and, simultaneously, knot in your stomach heart breaking, I Am Not Okay With This is a refreshing and memorable show that will take you on a ride as wild as puberty, with a dash of comic-book surrealism to help you along the way.
